Mr. Lif
I, Phantom
Editor's Review:
Lif's first Def Jux full-length and follow-up to the Emergency Rations and Enters the Colossus EPs, this album is the story of a young man who is killed by the ghetto lifestyle and is resurrected to save the hip-hop nation and face his own demons (there's a key to the whole story in the liner notes for all you higher-meaning types). Though it sounds a bit cheesy at face value, the story unfolds in a rather loose manner from a handful of different perspectives, and comes across pretty well. The beats on I, Phantom were crafted largely by Insight, Fakts One and Def Jux chief El-P, who all have different styles of doing things, but seem to share a similarly minded vibe for Lif's hard delivery, clever lyrical construction and cynical overview of the condition of life in America in 2002. Get ready to rock for a new revolution.- Max Sidman

Mr. Lif
Bio[+]This Boston native is one of the independent rap game's most dissonant MCs, a lyrical burner who spits clever and jumpin' rhymes of a sociopolitical nature. As a member of the Definitive Jux label roster, Lif is in good company with El P, Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock and more, and Lif's 2002 release, Emergency Rations just might be rap's definitive commentary on life in the millennium-to-date.
