Bad Astronaut

Houston: We Have A Drinking Problem

Editor's Review:

Wrapped up tight within this album's spacey production and layers of lush instrumentation are 14 catchy, well-written and passionate power-pop songs. Fronted by Lagwagon's Joey Cape, who writes and arranges all but two of the tracks, Bad Astronaut uses a wide variety of implements from the traditional - acoustic guitar and cello - to the technological - synthesizers and electronic drum loops - to create a rich tapestry of sound. Cape's pleading vocals work for the most part, lending strong personality to the mid-tempo and faster songs, especially "Disarm," but drag down slower, droopy numbers like "If I Had A Son" and "The Passing." Smartly titled, Houston: We Have A Drinking Problem does well by incorporating technology without compromising the music's integrity.
