Home Grown

Kings Of Pop

Editor's Review:

On Kings of Pop, pop-punk stalwarts Homegrown exhibit a somewhat meatier version of the shallow-but-fun pop-punk they're known for. This is in part thanks to producer Steve Evetts (Snapcase, Saves the Day) whose bluntly crisp production aesthetic does wonders for the band's sound. But like any good pop-punk, the strength of Homegrown lies in their ability to craft sing-able, if not predictable, melodic lines accompanied by the obligatory super-distorted, major-key power chord mania. Although many of the better numbers on Kings of Pop ("You're Not Alone," "I'll Never Fall in Love" and "Tomorrow") follow this tried-and-true pop-punk formula unflinchingly, Homegrown nevertheless comes off as sincere and Kings of Pop is, on the whole, a surprisingly decent record.
