Rocket From the Crypt

Live From Camp X-Ray

Editor's Review:

John Reis is on fire. This San Diego-based musician and songwriter has been working a lot lately, having wrapped up a tour with his other band, Hot Snakes, only a month or so before releasing this, Rocket's latest in a long line of albums. Live From Camp X-Ray represents a further re-solidification of this band after a period of label troubles and mediocre releases; though it is all too short - a painfully scant 26 minutes - this album is a reminder that Rocket is a powerhouse rock band, capable of mixing the elemental catchiness of pop with the hard charge and aesthetic of punk rock and the swinging groove of a horn section. This record hits its stride right away, specifically on "Get Down," which is punctuated by low-toned horn blasts that give an ominous feel to the song's inventive timing. The engineered sonic blast continues unfettered straight through 10 tracks, like the charged-up swagger of "Can You Hear It?" and the relentlessly rolling "Bring Us Bullets." When this album spins to a stop, the immediate compulsion is to hit the play button again.
