Semaphore EP

Editor's Review:

This four-piece - Lucy Atkinson (bass), Chris Martin (guitar, vocals), Matthew Reid Schwartz (guitar) and Dave Weeks (drums) - has built a reputation for themselves over the years as a powerhouse rock band, kicking out the rock at venues nationwide, and it's about time a label with some weight took notice. Though this is just a four-song teaser of what's to come (expect a full-length on Sub Pop in 2003), it's rich with simple but seamless chord progressions, understated vocals and an overall vibe that imparts both talent and care in the songwriting department. These songs are delivered partially in riff-mongering passages of heaviness interwoven with assertively subtle harmonic and melodic overtones; other tunes are equally as powerful, but presented with a more ethereal approach. The problem with short-but-sweet releases like this is that they end all too quickly.
