the Roots

Phrenology

Editor's Review:

Phrenology - besides being the study of the skull's construction based on the idea that it directly relates to the intelligence and character of its bearer - is The Roots' long-awaited follow-up to 1999's Grammy-winning Things Fall Apart. This release will please some fans and perplex others; there is definitely a bit more of a commercial element to the overall vibe of the record - guest spots from people like Nelly Furtado and Musiq - and there is a wider range of experimentation that touches on more production-heavy music and different R&B styles. However, after cutting through the treacle, fans will find plenty of good old Roots instrumental magic and the deft vocal ability of Black Thought, a classic team who lay it down on tracks like "Thought At Work," "Quills" and "Rolling With Heat," which features a great guest spot by Talib Kweli.
