Nas
God’s Son
Editor's Review:
Nas will never be able to live down the fact that his first album, the epic Illmatic, is one of the greatest rap records of all time that no one, including Nas himself, can ever come close to replicating. Tough break, but Nas has managed to move on. God's Son, much like the MC's last couple of releases, contains well-crafted rhymes that suffer slightly from a preachy tone, laid out over solid, gritty and streetwise beats, including dope use of samples from James Brown's "The Boss" and the simple piano melody from Beethoven's "Für Elise," as well as a track produced by Eminem ("The Cross"). However, long gone are the on-the-block bangers that permeated Illmatic's track listing, replaced now by a healthy dose of guest spots by artists who couldn't hold Nas' jockstrap, as well as a posthumous guest spot featuring the late great Tupac (how you like that, Jigga-man?) and even a jam featuring pop-soul siren Alicia Keys.- Max Sidman
