50 Cent
Get Rich Or Die Tryin'
Editor's Review:
The hype machine has been building momentum behind 50 Cent for quite some time
now: 50's immense unreleased street catalog, beef with just about every industry
name in hip-hop and faux bootleg rumors surrounding his debut release on Shady
/ Aftermath. Now, the bumped-up release date (á la The Eminem Show)
of Get Rich or Die Trying finally has arrived. Get Rich or Die Trying
has been dubbed by many the album of the year even before its release, and it's
only February. Acclaimed as the hottest shit on the streets, 50 has since blown
the fuck up on TRL with the breakout single "Wanksta," and
now the up-tempo Dr. Dre-produced party jam, "In the Club." Since
linking up with Dre and Eminem, the trio are being hyped and marketed as hip-hop's
"Dream Team." The question now remains: will 50 Cent live up to the
hype? Likely so, as Get Rich or Die Trying has got the juice and the
formulaic sound to make it a chart-topper. 50, Dre and Eminem have constructed
the SUV owner's wet dream: precision high-end production, venomous hooks and
street mentality lyricism. As would be expected, the Dre-produced tracks stand
out as the solid meat of the release ("In Da Club," "Heat,"
"If I Can't" and "Back Down"), while songs like "Patiently
Waiting" and "Poor Lil Rich" will steadily grow on you. 50 shines
so long as he sticks to what he does best; and that's bragging about himself
and reminding me that if I fuck with him, he'll kill me. Expect to hear 50 Cent
pumping out of each 4-wheel drive on 20-inch rims in every suburban high school
parking lot from Brooklyn to Burbank.
