Cat Power

You Are Free

Editor's Review:

Chan Marshall, a.k.a. Cat Power, returns with her first album of original material since 1998. The long awaited You Are Free is filled with 14 achingly beautiful and carefully crafted tracks. Recorded throughout 2002 with engineer Adam Kaspar (Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters), this is by far the most professionally engineered of Cat Power's albums. This isn't to say that it lacks the rawness of her earlier material; you can still feel her emotional, brittle vocals, soft guitar strumming and piano work. It's clever, smart and terribly depressing - all the makings of a great album. You Are Free opens with a typically Chan heartfelt ballad, "I Don't Blame You," then moves into the bouncy "Free," with a catchy guitar riff backed by piano. There isn't one point on You Are Free where I'm disappointed in the sound or content. It's great, hate me if you want.
