Rjd2
'The Horror' 12" single
Editor's Review:
The A-side of this second single from Rj's stellar 2002 Def Jux debut, Dead
Ringer, contains not only the album's lead track, "The Horror,"
but also the standout "Smoke & Mirrors." Arguably one of the best
songs on the full-length, its soulful vocal sample and smooth, strolling bass
lines lay seamlessly over the steady chime of a ride cymbal, comfortably gritty
piano lines and deep, rolling percussion. The real reason to pick up this 12-inch,
however, is the B-side: an exclusive remix of Dead Ringer's "Final
Frontier," featuring the multitalented Blueprint on vocals. This mix flips
the beat, utilizing multiple intertwining horn phrases backed by piano, organ
and guitar to create a Southern-soul-flavored tune. Blueprint takes the opportunity
to lay a new verse, and is joined by fellow Def Jukies Vast Aire (Cannibal Ox),
Aesop Rock and Murs, all of whom step to the mic with commanding authority,
spitting hard raps in a decidedly assertive stance.
