Murs
The End of the Beginning
Editor's Review:
Those of us who have followed the propitious career of Murs since the mid-‘90s
are finally going to be chanting, “I told you so.” Murs’s The
End of the Beginning has dropped, signifying the apex of this volatile MC’s
development. For longtime fans, Murs’ new release may not have the sobering
impact of classic cassette tapes like coMURShul or F’real. Regardless, Murs
has always stood out as the voice of the true hip-hop fan: Not afraid to say fuck
the underground and all its pretentiousness. Murs struck a chord with aging b-boys
and true schoolers when he commanded the hip-hop nation to “Just make good
music and shut the fuck up!” Thankfully The End Of The Beginning backs up
those words. Murs continues in his traditional style, always being that MC you
can identify with, sharing the same everyday problems and frustrations as hip-hop’s
blue collar fanbase. Exploding with the up-tempo banger “You & I,”
Murs ups the ante for the West Coast underground. “Happy Pillz” and
“God’s Work,” bring the funk, while your neck will go to work
bumpin’ “What Do You Know?,” “The Dance,” and probably
the most honest perception of hip-hop underground ever recorded, “Got Damned?”
As the Living Legends fanbase continues to expand regionally and overseas, and
now with the help of indie hip-hop’s ruling family, Definitive Jux, Murs
is stepping out into the front of the pack to be the first LL crewmember to achieve
indie-mercial success. All the while, Def Jux continues to please the underground
masses and make bandwagon-jumping posers look silly.
