Mr. Dibbs
The 30th Song
Editor's Review:
It should be immediately stated that this release is available on CD as well as
the three-record set, but given the nature of the music, it seems only fitting
to go the vinyl route; it’s just too bad the quality of the wax is thin
and kinda flimsy. All media snobbery aside, this is an amazing release from one
of the biggest names in the Midwestern underground.
Founding member of the 1200 Hobos crew and half of the duo Atmosphere, Dibbs has
been putting out a steady flow of indie-released mix tapes and other DJ albums
for years, but The 30th Song is perhaps his most complete full-length to date.
Contributions by such noted beat-smiths Fat Jon (Five Deez) and Jel (Anticon)
add a light and airy, soulful touch to the songs “Outreach 5” and
“Rhythmic Soaring”; DJ T-Rock gets down with Dibbs on “Porntablist”;
and a spoken word bit by Dibbs’ Atmosphere partner, rapper Slug, will surely
appeal to the ladies. However, what makes this release really good is the signature
Dibbs’ vibe: disturbingly dope drum tracks, furious scratches and otherwise
inventive song constructions utilizing everything from instantly recognizable
blues tracks and even a little nü-metal to old school hard-funk breaks, vocal
samples and even snippets from Dibbs’ own live shows. The result is a collection
of tracks that are cohesive and presentable enough to appeal to most hip-hop fans,
but freaky enough to enthrall those with a taste for more abstract sounds.
