Lateef the Truth Speaker

Lester Hayes

Editor's Review:

This is the first 12-inch single release from Maroons — teaming Blackalicious DJ Chief Xcel and Quannum MC Lateef the Truth Speaker — a chunky and funky, guitar-based tune that has plenty of head-nodding bottom end and a beat that’s steaming with the signature big sound of Chief Xcel. Scratches and other little audio extras are there but subtle, leaving plenty of room for Lateef to run all over the track. Though it’s been some time since he’s broke out from behind the label’s other acts, Lateef, easily Quannum’s most overlooked and arguably best rapper, comes correct yet again, spitting both battle raps and a crooning singsong style that gives a good dimension to this inventive MC’s delivery. This 12-inch only has one song (three versions) on it, but if it’s a signal of more to come, then I won’t complain.
