Tim Bluhm, the Mother Hips

The Soft Adventure

Editor's Review:

When I first moved to Chico, which was more years ago than I would like to admit, the Mother Hips were in the middle of their heyday. They had just been signed and things were looking great. In the years since then, perhaps things didn't quite work out as planned, but then again, that can probably be said for most of us. I'll admit, over the years, I didn't make every show I could have, nor did I follow every musical deviation with the same enthusiasm as I had during those early years, but so it goes. Now, only a few months after the Hips took that final ride off into the sunset, frontman Tim Bluhm is back in the saddle with his solo release, The Soft Adventure EP / Colts. As you may have noticed from the title, this is a split record, with the first half coming from some recent sessions and the later tracks hailing back to 1995 and 1996. While both of these recording sessions are heavily steeped in the relaxed, back-porch feeling that many people will remember from years past, these recordings are also driven by a quality that is distinctly their own. A little melancholy, maybe a little more personal, these songs seem to be reaching back to a time when things weren't so complicated, or at least we thought they weren't. It is great to see that these tracks, while perhaps sidelined in favor of other projects in the past, are finally seeing the light of day.
