Known mainly for being Death Cab For Cutie’s record label, Barsuk is beginning to cement itself as a respectable, if not terribly varied, independent label. Based in Seattle, Barsuk, as the cynical may expect, specializes in bands of the more thoughtful, emotional variety. Treats is evidence of this, with whine-rockers Death Cab contributing two cuts, including the endlessly endearing “A Movie Script Ending” from 2001’s The Photo Album. DCFC frontman Benjamin Gibbard appears elsewhere on this album with tracks from his solo project, All-Time Quarterback, and behind the kit with Kind of Like Spitting. Cuts from recently revived Nada Surf (yes, the Nada Surf that sang “Popular”), emo Ben Folds cover band The Prom and John Vanderslice make this compilation a perfect companion for a long, lonely night.
