Radiohead

Hail To The Thief

Editor's Review:

Despite the fact that it’s getting rave reviews, this is the first Radiohead album in recent years that hasn’t lit up the Billboard charts during its first few weeks in the racks. No matter. Sales stats have little do to with musical quality and a lot to do with marketing pushes, which is notably lacking from this particular release campaign. Again, no matter. Hail To The Thief counts among its many strengths the trademark, compellingly fucked-up croon of frontman Thom Yorke; the band’s eerie mastery of combining heavy production elements with sublime live musicianship; and the constant drive to move forward while retaining a signature vibe. The soft electro-percussion drive behind “Backdrifts,” the acoustic guitar-rooted, medium tempo gait of “Go To Sleep,” the distorted and synth-toned, slightly feverish bass line of “Myxomatosis” — all embody the depth and diversity in style of Radiohead.
