J-Zone

“Five Star Hooptie” b/w “Eatadiccup”

Editor's Review:

J-Zone, one of NYC’s most buzzed independent MCs and producers, is on track to issue his fourth self-released album, Sick Of Being Rich. In the typical J-Zone style, “Five Star Hooptie,” the album’s first single, is a simultaneously self-deprecating and self-promoting, broke-ass pimp tale of his car (“Mooove bitch! Get out the way! / that ain’t Ludacris playin’ when I ride / that’s just what they say!”) laid over a well-produced mid-tempo and deeply resonant beat with a handful of carefully looped samples. The single’s b-side, however, is what makes it worth the cover charge. Guest rapper Celph Titled mentions that he’s 6’1”, and he sounds like it — bombastic and commanding. The beat sports a snappy little flute loop backed by sinister tuba stabs over a classic rough beat that rolls with authority and lays the groundwork for J-Zone and Celph Titled to rip the mic right.

J-Zone has toured the Eastern United States, Australia and various parts of Europe and the U.K., where the bulk of his fanbase resides. Other releases include 2000’s Bottle of Whup Ass, 2001’s Pimps Don’t Pay Taxes and several 12’ singles. He has produced tracks for Biz Markie, High and Mighty and Ra the Rugged Man, and his motto is: “Fuck You, Pay Me.”
