The Show Must Go Off!: One Man Army Live at the Troubadour

Editor's Review:

In the latest installment of the live concert DVD series released by Kung Fu Films, San Francisco punk rock act One Man Army are featured at a less-than-stellar gig at LA’s famous Troubadour club. While this group is usually a sure bet with their live show, the group admits, mid-performance mind you, that they perhaps indulged in some form of chemical inspiration a bit too readily, thereby causing their uncharacteristically sloppy set. Among the 16 live tracks, many are included off of the group’s latest record, Rumours and Headlines. Special features for this disc include band commentary, a One Man Army photo gallery and online access to more goodies, but these fail to eclipse the disaster of the band’s performance. Where the DVD lacks is in any worthwhile footage of the band simply hanging out or goofing off, which is what you might expect from a label as notoriously comedic as the Joe Escalante (Vandals) owned Kung Fu. Uninteresting musings into the drinking habits of the band serve only to document the moments responsible for the debauchery and miscommunications shown later on in the band’s performance. Don’t count on the other five installments of this series being as lackluster as this particular one, as the Vandals and Alkaline Trio among others also have DVDs available through Kung Fu. Overall, I suppose punk rock is supposed to be played sloppily and that its musicians should remain indifferent to any technical aspects of creating a DVD to some standard level of quality, but I’d suggest just buying a One Man Army CD instead.
