El P, Mr. Lif and Rjd2

the Revenge of the Robots

Editor's Review:

Definitive Jux has been referred to as one of the most important hip-hop record labels to come along since Def Jam was a fledgling operation. The comparison is rooted in the fact that, like Def Jam in its early days, Def Jux is shaping what hip-hop is, and more importantly, what it is going to be. Now — a time when this young but powerful label is starting to really come into its own — the folks behind this indie rap juggernaut are releasing a DVD that, in addition to chronicling three of its artists’ time on the road, also includes a short documentary about the label, as well as a few juicy extras and a bonus CD with new mixes and live renditions of classic Def Jux jams.
The tour documentary, Revenge of the Robots, follows rapper Mr. Lif, DJ Rjd2 and label owner, producer and rapper El P as the trio toured in 2002 with Eastern Conference artists Cage, Copywrite and DJ Fakts One. From New York to San Francisco and back as well as through Europe, the crew performs, plays and proselytizes. The label documentary focuses mostly on El P and label artists Vast Aire of Cannibal Ox and Aesop Rock, and though it’s a bit on the low-budget tip, there’s lots of good stuff in it and, along with the tour documentary, it provides a look at the label and its artists that fans might not otherwise see. This DVD also contains a handful of music videos from EL P, Murs, Mr. Lif and Rjd2 — most of which won’t be on MTV any time soon.

This Boston native is one of the independent rap game's most dissonant MCs, a lyrical burner who spits clever and jumpin' rhymes of a sociopolitical nature. As a member of the Definitive Jux label roster, Lif is in good company with El P, Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock and more, and Lif's 2002 release, Emergency Rations just might be rap's definitive commentary on life in the millennium-to-date.
