Thrice

The Artist in the Ambulance

Editor's Review:

The Artist in the Ambulance serves as a convenient marker for what is almost certainly the next phase in the world of mainstream rock; nü-metal is out, emo metal is in. Musically, Thrice harkens back to the metal days of yore; palm-muted, detuned chunkiness, interspersed with harmonized guitar lines, all atop kick-heavy, perpetual-breakdown drumbeats. However, frontman Dustin Kensrue’s voice, when he’s not hollering his brains out, is pure, buttery pop brilliance. Although the packaging and production all scream “pretentious!,” Thrice is one of those bands who cannot be hated. Linkin Park better watch out.
