Gang Starr

The Ownerz

Editor's Review:

Hip-hop has been living rent free for the past five years. It acted like there wouldn’t be any consequences for its behavior, and ignored all responsibilities that come with being a part the culture. All the bullshit ceases though, when Gang Starr — the ownerz of this art — kick down the door. It’s like hip-hop takes a step back, and just watches to see what Primo and Guru will come with. When I say The Ownerz is another classic album, it’s really not a surprise, and has become something that is to be expected. With 19 tracks total, there are 17 bangers, a skit and a disappointment in the “Milita pt.3.” Premier is still the best ever, and Guru is dead on when he claims, “I’m the Jerry Rice of this / much too nice to quit.
