Slayer: War At The Warfield
Editor's Review:
Slayer recorded this concert during a stop on their God Hates Us All tour
at the Warfield in San Francisco on December 7th, 2001. In an impressive and
well-honed assault on an adoring Bay Area audience, metal’s hardest and
loudest band unleashed 19 true heavy metal songs, including classics like “Hell
Awaits,” “Dittohead” and “South of Heaven,” all
relentlessly savage tracks that fed the room’s seething environment. Numbers
like “Raining Blood,” “War Ensemble” and “Dead
Skin Mask” got both band and crowd whipped into a visible frenzy, displaying
a legendary energy between the stage and floor that has given Slayer one of
the most feared and loyal fan bases in rock — drunk on twisted, undying
enthusiasm and cheap beer.
Slayer fans are freakishly dedicated to their favorite band, so also contained
on this DVD is a fascinating documentary called Fans Rock, directed
by Marc Paschke. This brief look at Slaytanic culture reveals fans who think
of the band as a religion and refer to shows as “church.” It takes
a look at how Slayer’s music appeals to disaffected kids of all ages and
walks of life; introduces fans who go to Slayer shows with their children; and
fans for whom Slayer’s music and live shows are their healthiest form
of cathartic release — “good friendly violent fun,” says one.
Ultimately, Slayer worshippers appreciate the fact that, in 20 years, Tom, Kerry,
Jeff and Paul (or Dave) have never bullshitted their fans, never deviated from
their path, and never given any less than their all.
