Motion City Soundtrack

I Am the Movie

Editor's Review:

At what point in an artist’s endeavors do they decide to limit the amount that their influences are felt in their work? Motion City Soundtrack are still wrestling with this conundrum and finding their voice as a group in the process. Falling somewhere between The Anniversary and Jimmy Eat World, this album relies more on its sparkling production than anything. The opening, “Cambridge,” is an explosive synth-rocker that sets the bar just slightly above the rest of the album in terms of quality. Not that this release is an unpleasant listen; to the contrary, it contains some impressive musicianship and has its moments. It’s just not substantial enough to be enduring.
