J-Live, Talib Kweli

No Edge Ups In South Africa

Editor's Review:

7 Heads, the label that houses underground heavyweights such as J-Live, has compiled 14 tracks inspired by a trip to South Africa. But don’t get it twisted, this isn’t a political, theme-orientated album in the slightest bit. This album is thick on the jazz tip, and laced by lyricsits who take their job as MCs seriously. The relaxed, smoothed out vibe is explempifed on “Mood Swing” which finds Asheru and Kweli gliding over a nice piano loop, and soulful hook. There are some live joints, like “Bosoms” that teams Soulive’s Eric Krasno and Neal Evans with rhyme spitters J-Live and Wordsworth. Even the instrumental heads get blessed with a Djinji Brown banger. The mix of artists on this compilation makes sense, which makes this compilation worth checking out.
