Soul Seven, Peanut Butter Wolf
Live At The South Dallas Pop Festival 1970
Editor's Review:
Leave it to DJ, producer, label owner and musical archivist Peanut Butter Wolf
to cull this classic from the depths of funk’s past. PB Wolf transferred
this entire performance from the original quarter-inch tape source recording
to CD, and the sound quality is surprisingly good. Sure, it’s a live show
put down on audio tape in 1970, but the richness and depth of the sound sports
a living, breathing quality that is solely an attribute of analog recordings,
even on CD. This show, which happened Monday June 22nd, 1970 at the Central
Forest Panthers Club, feature five acts — Marchel Ivery Quintet, Soul
Seven, Apollo Commanders, Black Maffia, Les Watson and The Panthers —
all of whom represent with archetypal, down and dirty, big booty funk and soul
music, and none of whom are remotely famous these days. That’s exactly
what this CD is: a lost nugget of gold, rediscovered.
