Rap compilations often fall into one of a few categories: fair overviews of the underground scene they’re representing; the work of oversized crews of mediocre hip-hoppers relying on collected talent rather than individual talent; or collections of bling bling jiggy rap, usually attached to major motion pictures. State Of The World falls into the first category. This compilation features big movers in today’s underground, like DJs Quest, Roli Rho, and the Xecutioners’ Rob Swift and Total Eclipse, and MCs like Invisible, Mondee, Cannibal Ox’s Vast Aire and Atmosphere’s Slug. There really isn’t a bad song on this release, though there’s nothing that really explodes out of the track listing either. It is what it is — a solid representation of a slice of the hip-hop underground, and a fair primer to some of the scene’s most buzzed names.
