One could argue that the phrase “mainstream punk” is an oxymoron, but if legitimate, it is perhaps best exemplified on Kung Fu Record’s new enhanced CD sampler, Punk Rock is Your Friend, complete with live footage for computer viewing. This compilation not only includes, but altogether embraces the newer sound of the genre (four chords instead of three, a little melody and light, non-political libretto). The lineup consists of relatively newer bands (Tsunami Bomb and One Man Army) as well as some remnants of punk rock’s rawer past (The Vandals). Strangely enough, the not-so-punk Ozma (otherwise known as Weezer: The Sequel) contribute the first track, but they contrast well with the rest of the lineup and offer perhaps the most unique sound on the album.
