Lyrics Born

'Callin' Out' b/w 'Cold Call' 12-inch

Editor's Review:

Back in the day, when Quannum was known as Solesides, Lyrics Born used to refer to himself as “Asia Born” but he’s all grown up now, and as the second single from his forthcoming full-length Later That Day… displays, so is his style. On “Callin’ Out” LB proves that he can still rap — fast, clean and accurate — but he’s obviously become quite fond of singing, and loads his tracks with tons of vocal soul, both female and male; in this case, courtesy of chanteuse Joyo Valarde and LB’s own mid-toned but husky voice. This single’s A-side is a funky head-nodding tune, rooted in strong bass, kick drum, hand clap and organ, with some horns thrown in for good measure. The B-side features Blackalicious’ Gift of Gab, but the song’s vocals aren’t as interesting as the tune’s music and concept.
