Frank Black and the Catholics

Show Me Your Tears

Editor's Review:

Show Me Your Tears, the latest from Frank Black and the Catholics, is appropriately somber. The dominant tone is dusty and downtrodden — even when the tempo picks up in songs like “Jaina Blues” and “The Snake,” there seems to be little in the way of wide-eyed optimism. Weathered and hardened, Frank Black’s salty voice sounds like it’s been around the block a few times, especially on “New House of the Pope” where he entones, “In the evening I want my coffee / And in the morning I want my dope.” Recorded live to two-track without edit, the sound on this recording is warm, consoling and authentic, seeming more at home on crackly vinyl than compact disc. A fine release, but it would be hard to expect anything less from an artist with such an impressive résumé.
