Sublime, Peter Tosh and Pato Banton
Better off Dread: An MVD Reggae Collection
Editor's Review:
What collection of reggae concert footage would be complete without 1) a tribute
to ganja and 2) a bunch of stoned white audience members slaughtering this thing
they call "the dance?" Certainly not Better off Dread, the
new MVD reggae compilation, which could easily serve as a crash course for those
interested in, but not up-to-date on the current reggae scene. Along with various
renditions of classic Rasta hits ("Legalize It," “5446 That’s
My Number”), the slightly more synthetic dancehall side of reggae appears
frequently (Yellowman, Pato Banton). Though brief, also included is some live
footage of Sublime, who stick out like a sore thumb compared to the mostly Jamaican-born
roster (Peter Tosh, Israel Vibration), yet somehow pull it off with grace and
style.
