From Autumn To Ashes
The Fiction We Live
Editor's Review:
Somewhere along the line, the members of From Autumn to Ashes had a conversation
probably similar to the following — Dude #1: “I totally
think we should sound like Megadeth with Sepultura vocals,” Dude #2:
“ I think we should sound like Thursday with AFI vocals,” Dude
#3: “Dudes! We should totally do both!” This being said, From
Autumn to Ashes certainly sounds somewhat sincere in their genre melding, but
at times the dualism can be rather tiring. “No Trivia” and “Autumn’s
Monologue” (featuring the stunningly beautiful vocals of Melanie Wills
of Long Island, New York, band One True Thing) both dispense with the Cookie
Monster vocals and metal conventions, making them, to more timid ears, the album’s
most readily accessible tracks. They also serve to highlight the idea that,
though the novelty of being simultaneously butt-metal hardcore and limp-wrist
emo is somewhat compelling, it’s not necessarily better than being one
or the other.
From Autumn To Ashes is like the Frosted Mini-Wheats of the neo-hardcore scene:
fans of sugary sweetness will only wish that both sides were frosted, while
fans of fiber-y, colon-cleansing, metal fury will find the sugar coating an
unnecessary extravagance. However, as nü-metal gives its final death rattle,
bands like FATA are poised to assume the proverbial “voice of the angry
youth” role. If nothing else, their music is an apt representation of
today’s youth: equal parts refined self-reflection, and primal, unfocused
anger.
