Andrew W.K.

The Wolf

Editor's Review:

Andrew W.K. has not mastered the art of subtlety with his music, which is probably a good thing given his particular mode of expression. His latest effort, The Wolf, sounds huge and energetic, best suited for being blasted over the loudspeakers at a football game, with explosive pop-metal guitar hooks, reverberating choruses of vocals and towering waves of synthesizers. The lyrics are cheap canned beer-soaked, fist-pumping inspirationals, rallying cries of never-ending parties, teenaged rebellion and, strangely enough, true love. Whether he’s getting “Totally Stupid” or falling “Really In Love,” Andrew W.K.’s convictions are so overblown, they can’t be anything but sincere, and that’s probably what makes this album so engaging and just plain fun. The Wolf will undoubtedly list as a guilty (and maybe not-so guilty) music pleasure for many in 2003.
