Atmosphere
Seven's Travels
Editor's Review:
That girl you like’s favorite rapper is back, and he’s up to his
same old tricks. It’s funny, every time Slug and Ant drop a new opus there’s
always a few more indie rockers and stylish females cruising the hip-hop aisle.
This time will be no different. Seven’s Travels will definitely
satisfy the hunger of those that compose the phenomenon that is Atmosphere’s
devout worshipers. Now, not everyone is as devoted to Atmosphere as our little
‘zine here and I can feel where they’re coming from. The subject
matter of Mr. Sep Sev Sev Two hasn’t really changed much since the days
of Headshots Seven. Some call it emo, I’d call it evil; Slug’s
got the ability to exploit the obvious and make the dismal architecture of everyday
life go down smoothly alongside a shot of bourbon with a beer back. The modern
man is still singing the blue-collar blues and it’s easy to get caught
up in the doldrums when Slug’s words hit so close to home.
You’ve probably already heard that the record is better than their previous
release, God Loves Ugly, and I’ll have to agree; Seven’s
is a bit more solid. Slug comes from the gut early in the record with “Trying
to Find a Balance,” getting some things off his chest. After that the
record manifests just like all other Atmosphere releases; you get some highlights
like “Apple,” “Cats, Vans, Bags” and “Liquor Lyles
Cool July”; a couple low points like “Gotta Lotta Walls,”
and “Shoes”; and as always, something for the ladies, “Lift
Her Pull Her” and “Good Times.” Bottom line, your girlfriend
wants you to buy this album.

Bio[+]Atmosphere — a.k.a. rapper Slug and his DJ-dû-jour, usually Abilities or Mr. Dibbs — holds down hip-hip in the Midwestern mecca of Minneapolis, MN. A member of the Rhymesayers crew (along with Eyedea), this enigmatic romeo of a rapper has found huge success in the underground with releases like Se7ens and the available-on-tour-only Sad Clown Bad Dub series. With the wide release of 2002’s God Loves Ugly it’s just a matter of time before this honest and talented MC breaks out on a large scale. – Max Sidman (May 2002)
