Aesop Rock

Bazooka Tooth

Editor's Review:

This New York City born and bred MC has built a feverish online following that has begun to translate to record sales, and of all the MCs who represent the bubbling up of the underground, Aesop Rock is among the best. Short of abstract, most of the beats on Bazooka Tooth were produced by Aseop himself and are set in gloriously out-of-wack grooves made up of deep, mostly dark mashes of electronic and acoustic sounds that sport both a uniqueness and an inherent head-nodding bounce. Lyrically, Aesop continues to reach out to listeners by simply relaying his own experiences, observances and misgivings. Opting to spit interpretive lines of street-level poetry rather hype his block or his crew or his ride, Aesop is not necessarily a self-effacing rapper, but he’s certainly not a nut-grabbin’ MC either. His creative approach to expression is generally without overt ego, and hits more than it misses. Some advice to listeners: pay attention when you listen to this record.
