El P

Sunrise Over Bklyn

Editor's Review:

Definitive Jux Records owner, MC and producer El-P is indeed a diverse character. The Brooklyn native, born Jamie Meline, wrote and produced this piece of music, and this is indeed more than just some songs — it is a movement; add ‘composer’ to El-P’s list of credits. For this release, El-P turns from hip-hop to jazz, opening his movement with a stirring and gradually building introduction that manifests into a powerful, multi-faceted arrangement. This composition is performed by new school avant jazz players, The Blue Series Continuum (Guillermo Brown, drums; Roy Campbell, trumpet; Daniel Carter, reeds; William Parker, bass; Matthew Shipp, piano; and Steve Swell, trombone), making it decidedly more modern than classic jazz. Still, it is an interesting attempt resulting in several interesting passages. At the very least, it cannot be said that El-P isn’t versatile.
