Take Action! Volume 3

Editor's Review:

For the third straight year, some of the emo, punk and hardcore scenes’ biggest names have banded together to help raise money for the National Hopeline Network (1-800-SUICIDE) by contributing tracks to the voluminous double-disc Take Action compilation. More so than in past years, Volume 3 leans towards the heavier side of things, what some would say is an apt reflection of the current state of the scene in general. Disc one starts off with Poison The Well and Thrice, two of the more likely successors to the new, nü-metal trendsetter throne. Avenged Sevenfold, Rise Against, Shadows Fall and Paint It Black follow suit. Disc one also includes more mellow contributions from Thursday (whose “From the Workforce, Drowning” is mediocre at best), Vaux, The Beautiful Mistake, Slick Shoes, Recover and Boy Sets Fire among others.
Disc two is — fortunately for those not quite prepared for metal’s rebirth — chock-full of more melodic, even sometimes outright gloriously wimpy, emotional rock. Standout tracks include Yellowcard’s “Life of a Salesman,” Spitalfield’s “I Love the Way She Said LA” and Armor for Sleep’s “Being Your Walls.” Fall Out Boy, Further Seems Forever, Copeland, Rufio, Elliott, Small Brown Bike, Cursive, The Jealous Sound and the Ataris also donate their services to disc two. If you have any interest in dying your hair black, wear skate shoes (especially if you don’t skate) or just have an interest in somewhat fresh and sort of independent music, there are certainly worse ways to get the lowdown than this comp. Besides you’ll stack some positive karma in the process.

Bio[+]
Love them or hate them, Avenged Sevenfold has certainly filled a niche vacated by the Harley-riding rock bands that became extinct after Grunge burst on to the scene in the early '90s. The group formed in 1999 and recorded their first album, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, when the members were just 18 years old.
