Azure Ray
Hold On Love
Editor's Review:
Accepting heartbreak’s inevitability, Azure Ray assume the stoicism of
stepping into a taut lace corset; the pain you put yourself through is easier
to bear knowing it’ll make you all the more pretty. With Hold On Love,
somber never looked so damned attractive. Tightly bound, this demure and dreamy
duo casts their songs in a high-fi mix of strings and pianos, grinding electronic
programming and patches of harmonization, making melancholic and purposeful
baroque pop. Dark and elegant like E.A. Poe set to music, Hold On Love
recalls the hopeful but dreary sentiments of Mazzy Star and the darker moments
of Tori Amos’ Under the Pink, but is not without its moments
of pointed upbeat-ness (“New Resolution,” “Nothing Like a
Song”) and occasional inebriated excellence (“The Drinks we Drank
Last Night”).
