My Chemical Romance

I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love

Editor's Review:

Produced by Thursday’s Geoff Rickly, My Chemical Romance’s sound is dark and brooding, even on their sunnier tracks. On “Headfirst for Halos,” frontman Gerard Way sings “Red ones make me fly / And the blue ones help me fall / And I think I’ll blow my brains against the ceiling” over a catchy beat. I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love has no shortage of enthusiasm; Way’s delivery is so emphatic, he almost seems to sing himself out of breath, and their frenetic music can be euphoric (“Our Lady of Sorrows”). My Chemical Romance mixes tenets of metal, pop-punk and hardcore with sincerity, though their gothic-tinged lyrics and flair for the dramatic can be too outlandish, especially in “Early Sunsets Over Monroeville.” Fix the back of your hand firmly to your forehead; this is a great album to scream yourself to tears to.
