Bright Eyes

There Is No Beginning To The Story 12"

Editor's Review:

Though not exactly hot off the presses, this Bright Eyes EP stands as a solid musical vignette and prelude to Oberst’s latest and most accomplished album, Lifted…; in fact, two of the tracks even yield lyrics which became the full-length’s full title. With side one encapsulated by an organ’s ambiguous chord and a handheld recorder’s fast-forward zip, Conor Oberst and company forge through the expected topics, reminiscing on youth and brief hazy love affairs with that endearing (or enraging, as the case may be) verge-of-tears Oberst vocal. The five non-LP tracks range in recording quality and arrangement, from demo-scratchy to fleshed-out fullness; and with lyrics both heavy-handed and brilliantly simple. Not the best place to start for a fledgling Bright Eyes fanatic, but still a quality release.
