Conducted by Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, the music on this particular volume of the Desert Sessions series was co-written by PJ Harvey, performed by a veritable rogue’s gallery of top notch players including Homme and Harvey, former Marilyn Manson guitarist Twiggy Ramirez, Dean Ween (who should need no introduction), Vandals and A Perfect Circle drummer Josh Freese and many more. Between the line-up, Homme’s knack for big and bristly yet oddly catchy melodies and Harvey’s haunting vocal ability and darkly off-center songwriting skills, this is an amazingly diverse and undeniably dope record. From acoustic-based dirges like “There Will Never Be A Better Time” to flat out punk fucking rock ‘n’ roll like “Covered In Punks Blood” to more intricately layered tunes like “Powdered Wig Machine,” Desert Sessions 9 & 10 will no doubt be one of the greatest, largely overlooked rock records of the year.
