the Distillers

Coral Fang

Editor's Review:

Frontwoman Brody Dalle (she dropped the last name, too…sorry, Tim) grabs The Distillers’ latest release, Coral Fang, by the lip ring and tosses it around in a fit of frightening, wounded rage. The former Mrs. Armstrong isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty, as her lyrics would attest — death obsessed and confrontational, they can be as scathing as her blood-curdling voice, but Dalle doesn’t just hide behind a callous “fuck you” attitude. Songs like “Dismantle Me” and “For Tonight You’re Only Here to Know” delve a bit deeper, leaving the songwriter exposed and vulnerable. Coral Fang is remarkably rough and at times abrasive — the closing track, “Death Sex,” is over 12 minutes of chunky, down-tuned distortion and feedback — but its visceral appeal is undeniable.
