Hieroglyphics

Full Circle

Editor's Review:

Despite a spotty, irregular release schedule over the last few years, Oakland-based Hieroglyphics crew - Del Tha Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pop Love, Souls of Mischief and Domino - is still one of the Bay Area's most famous and entrenched hip-hop collectives with a reputation that won't die. That may be because, when this independent crew decides it's time to unleash a posse record on the public, they come correct - 1998's Third Eye Vision is a classic, and Full Circle doesn't far fall from that tree. Produced by Hiero mainstays Domino, Casual, and the Souls' A+ and Opio, Full Circle is reminiscent of that classic Hiero sound - soulful and funky but not overdone, utilizing lots of flute, bass and key riffs over neck-snapping beats. Lyrically, Hiero's stayed strong and current, constructing raps about everything from nerd rap and the cancerous record business to the trials of everyday life. - Max Sidman
