Punk Goes Acoustic

Editor's Review:

As readily suggested by its title, this compilation courtesy of compilation masters Fearless Records features a horde of punk-ish new school and semi-hardcore bands going more or less unplugged. However, the results are more compelling than the half-baked Dashboard Confessional impressions one might expect. Although varying in production quality, a few of the bands presented benefit mightily from the austerity afforded by acoustic setting: Thursday’s rendition of “A Hole in the World,” Yellowcard’s “Firewater,” The Starting Line’s “Playing Favorites” and a not-so-acoustic “Away to the Heart” from Noise Ratchet all are well worth a listen. Other tracks from Thrice, Sugarcult, Rufio, Midtown Taking Back Sunday and Finch, among others, round out this transiently enjoyable collection of tracks.

Bio[+]
With catchy choruses, amped performances and a shamelessly poppy approach to punk rock, Santa Barbara’s Sugarcult has been performing their aloof and bouncy music since forming in 1998. Vocalist / guitarist Tim Pagnotta apparently named the group after his neighbors; seven lesbians who referred to themselves as the ‘sugar cult.’ With bassist Airin Older and drummer Ben Davis providing harmonies and Marko 72 (expatriate of The Ataris, Swingin' Utters and Nerf herder) on guitar, the group has received national exposure through 2001’s Warped Tour, supporting bands such as Blink 182, Unwritten Law and Good Charlotte on national tours, and The Decibel Music Conference in Trinidad, West indies in May of 2001. Their Ultimatum debut, Start Static was released in August of 2001 and was produced by Matt Wallace.
