Mastodon

Remission

Editor's Review:

Relapse Records is fast establishing itself as the nation’s leader in quality independent metal, and this Mastodon CD and DVD set is just another example of why. This and most other Relapse releases are very nicely packaged — but let’s face it, while slick containers look and feel nice, they’re no substitute for good-music. Mastodon does not disappoint in that category. Most importantly, this Atlanta-based quartet unleashes metallic fury marked by intense and lighting fast riffage, put down over some of the most dynamic and impressive drumming the genre has to offer. Songs like “Burning Man” and “Mother Puncher” pack a walloping punch — a kick to the head is more like it — but Mastodon can also put forth those slower, more grinding and churning tunes that dig deep into metal’s sonic pockets and eke out the music’s definition. The DVD portion of this release is a live recording of the band at a hometown club called Masquerade, captured in 2002.
