Iggy Pop
Skull Ring
Editor's Review:
On his seventh album for Virgin Records, punk rock’s flamboyant granddaddy
Iggy Pop works with a variety of collaborators, likely and unlikely, young and
old. Iggy fronts Green Day on “Private Hell” and “Supermarket”
(both co-written by Billie Joe Armstrong), joining forces for Skull Ring’s
catchiest offerings; lends his talents, and much-needed old school credibility,
to fresh-faced pop-punkers Sum 41 on “Little Know It All”; and teams
up with Euro-trash synth-rocker Peaches on “Rock Show.” Most notably,
however, is Iggy’s reunion with The Stooges for four new tracks, which
are, much like most of the aforementioned collaborations, enjoyable but not
much to get excited over. Though lacking star power, the songs Iggy wrote and
recorded with his current backing band, The Trolls — such as the apathetic
anthem “Whatever” and kitschy rocker “Superbabe” —
may be the most solid tracks Skull Ring has to offer.
