I never used to mess with compilations, but lately it seems labels have been putting a big emphasis on getting quality cuts, not the fillers usually common on these types of projects. All the big names like MF Doom, Aesop Rock and Cannibal Ox bring the typical ill shit that is pretty much expected by now. Vordul Megilah of Cannibal Ox really shines on two cuts and shows promise for a solo career. Bootie Brown of the Pharcyde came out of left field with “I Smoke” but, yo, he’s sounding good. What makes this comp ill is that there is a heavy, kind of dark vibe that haunts each cut, but with so many different artists and styles it never reaches that point of being redundant. It’s worth what you’ll pay.
