Tenacious D

The Complete Master Works

Editor's Review:

Like Spinal Tap before them, Tenacious D portrays the hyper-serious world of rock ‘n’ roll for what it is — silly and childish. The two-man satirical rock group’s latest DVD, The Complete Masterworks, is a mammoth two-disc collection that begins with a full live concert of the D at the Brixton Academy in London, England.
For two older, husky men with acoustic guitars, Kyle Gass and Jack Black produce copious amounts of rock fueled by adolescent idiocy. Black plays the part of overbearing frontman perfectly, complete with prima donna attitude. He scolds the crowd, road crew and his bandmate with arrogant dismissals, but his voice — big, rich and delivered with staggering conviction — manages to push aside his weighty persona to take front and center. While Black does the appropriate grandstanding, Gass bears the musical talent, providing harmonic backing vocals and wielding his acoustic axe to mete out everything from “Crazy Train” during a solo medley to intricate classical movements during “Rock Your Socks.” The first disc is rounded out by Tenacious D’s HBO episodes, which include songs not appearing on the concert or variants of hits like “Tribute.”
If that’s not enough for you (and it should be), the second disc, “For Psycho Fans Only,” provides tons more footage of “the greatest band on earth.” Disc two features three gut-wrenching short films; television appearances; a behind the scenes look at Tenacious D in the studio; three music videos, with short “Making of…” documentaries for two of them; and a hilarious tour documentary highlighting the band’s ‘difficult’ relationship with the road. It may change the way you look at the rock, man.
