Diverse
One AM
Editor's Review:
This Chicago MC has been making impressive contributions to compilations and
other people’s work for a few years now, and it’s about time that
Diverse gave curious fans a full-length to get into. One AM is as solid a debut
as they come, offering a good cross section of this rapper’s abilities.
Diverse comes with a hard style in songs “747 (Flyin’)!!”
and the opening number, “Certified,” featuring a wicked guitar loop
and a heavy dose of battle style scratching. But this talented rhyme writer
also keeps things cool with more soulful tunes like “Uprock” and
“Ain’t Right,” with its smooth, watery keys and jingle bells,
or in “Accordance,” a heavily jazzy tune featuring Miles Davis-like
horn fills and a soft beat rooted in sizzling cymbals and the constant thump
of a kick drum. Largely produced by it-boys Prefuse 73 and Rjd2, Diverse is
joined on the mic by the likes of Jean Grae, Lyrics Born and Vast Aire, adding
a little extra credibility to a good debut release.
