Let It Be… Naked

Editor's Review:

After recording The Beatles’ seminal Let It Be album, producer Phil Spector added voluminous orchestral and choral tracks to create a grander sound than the band could offer simply playing live in the studio. This Naked release is sans the Spector touch. Though songs like “Two Of Us” obviously can’t be altered much from their original forms, the lack of over-production on many of these tunes gives most of them a comfortably refreshing vibe. Old favorites like “Get Back,” “The Long And Winding Road” and “I Me Mine” sound as if they’ve been cleaned up and presented as they were initially intended, and the work of temporary fifth Beatle keyboard player Billy Preston really stands out on some tunes. Unfortunately, without the Spector production, songs like “I’ve Got A Feeling” and “One After 909” end up coming off more as typical hippie jams than the classic nuggets of pop-rock gold that generally populate this release.
