Sarah McLachlan

Afterglow

Editor's Review:

One of music’s most evocative voices is back with a new album entitled Afterglow. On her new disc, Sarah McLachlan continues, yet fails to surpass, the sound of 1997’s Surfacing. Layers of guitars and keyboards form a lush backing for McLachlan’s singular vocals. Adding to this is the insistent cello on “Stupid” and four more of the ten songs on Afterglow. Her percussionist and husband, Ashwin Sood, contributes some interesting loops which are, sadly, pushed too far back in the mix. It would be nice to hear McLachlan take a few more chances musically. Her vocal talents are strong enough to carry her into many new and different musical territories. If you already own Surfacing, Afterglow is not a necessity.
